Tobin Range is visible in this westward looking shot. Buffalo Valley is interesting and easily accessible from Battle Mountain, NV.

This airmail beacon had an acetylene powered flashing light that helped pilots keep on course. It was built in the mid-1920's and operated until early 1930's.
The beacon is on the part of Buffalo Valley called "alkali lake" (USGS 7.5' topo "Buffalo Springs NE"). Except for the missing light, it looks like it could still be used.

Tobin Range in view.
Airmail pilots used a light on this tower to stay on course in the 1920's and 30's.

This abandoned airfield was built as an emergency landing field for airmail pilots. These fields were about 50-60 miles apart. This one has an arrow for direction (beacon tower has been removed from arrow), gas (tank supports ruins seen behind arrow) and fancy curbing on the taxiways and roads. A local rancher has built a corral here since the place was abandoned in the 1930's. My theory on the metal cones is they were for lights - the cones directed the light down and were visible but not too bright.
The satellite view of this airport (visible on flickr map- change to sat view) shows a triangle of runways just north of this location. I don't know if this field was ever used but was available in case of trouble.

There is more to Buffalo Valley than abandoned airports and airway beacon towers - there is the hot springs. There are several more spring outlet pools around in a small area. I put my hand in, but only for an instant because it is very hot. I believe there is no way these could be used for soaking without some scheme to cool the water. Research after the trip shows the springs temperature as 174 degrees F. However, it would be a nice soak contemplating the Tobin Range. This area is marked on the USGS 7.5" Quadrangle "Wild Range Canyon".
