The XY Falcon was released by Ford Australia in October 1970 replacing the XW Falcon. The XY was a facelift of the XW, featuring a new divided grille and redesigned tail lights. Improvements were made to seating, safety equipment and ride quality.
The XY Falcon range featured eight passenger vehicles and three commercial models including the Falcon, Futura and Fairmont names. Futura and Fairmont models, whilst marketed as part of the XY Falcon range, were not officially referred to or badged as Falcons.
The Fairmont was added to Ford's Australian lineup in September 1965 as part of the Falcon XP range. The Fairmont has been through many incarnations since then, each one aligned with the contemporary Falcon series but usually with a better grade of interior and different exterior lights, front grille and other features.
