SSV (SAFTY SYSTEMS VEHICLES)
With the 1965 publication of US safty zeaolots, publication Unsafe At Any Speed. The motor industry particularly those hoping to market their cars in the US were under pressure to find new methods of vehicle safety that would satisfy possible future US legistlation. The old adage safety does not sell was suddenly turned around. BLMCs early response was eo modify the Austin 1300 and MGB. However, by the early 1970s, the company had embarked on a programme to explore the future of car safety technology, leading to the development of the Safety Systems Vehicle (SSV1) in 1972. Two years later, in collaboration with the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, a further five prototypes were developed under the Safety Research Vehicle (SRV) project.

Like the other safety car projects, the Morris Marina based SRV1 introduced a host of proposed safety improvements SRV1 was the first of five SRV prototypes prepared in 1974 this time based on a two door Morris Marina, external modifications included a deformable front-end and impact-absorbing bumpers, while the interior featured font and rear head restraints and a padded barrier built into the centre of the rear seat.to prevent passengers heads impacting into each other during a collision. This car was also referred to as the ‘ESV Marina Phase 1’, ESV standing for ‘Experimental Safety Vehicle’.Other specifications include a strengthened basic structurewith progressive crush front structures, smooth bonnet to minimise injury to pedestrians, low soft faced bumpers, strengthened door beams, door dovetailed over sills filled with foam tp absord side impacts, fuel tank repositioned over rear axlebetween the wheels and the fully padded interior, collapsible steering column and padded steering wheel boss, passive restraint front seat belts automatic inertia locks on the front seats, front and rear head restraints, Avon safety wheels able to run with deflated tyres, Girling dual circuit brakes, retractable headlamps with wash wipe.
