Designed by William T Collins chief engineer and designer and formerly chief engineer at Pontiac. which envisaged a chassis built ERM (Elastic Reservoir Moulding. This was proved to be unsuitable and the project was turned over to Colin Chapman of Lotus for re-engineering. The car was then constructed on a backbone chassis similar to that of the Lotus Esprit. The Giorgetto Giugiaro penned body design remained almost unaltered.
John Z Delorean then set about raising finance and approached several Hollywood celebrities such as Johnny Carson and Sammy Davies Jnr. as investors. The British Labour Government of Harold Wilson offered Delorean millions of pounds finance to site his new factory in Belfast Northern Ireland in order to bring jobs and stability to the region. The factory was built in Dunmurry on the outskirts of Belfast, delays caused an over run but by 1981 the problems had been ironed out and production began. But in 1982 the company was bankrupt with about 100 partially assembled cars on the production line. In October 1982 Delorean was arrested for drug traffiicking and was later found not guilty.
The Delorean will always be known as the car from the movie Back to the Future in which a specially prepared the DMC-12 was driven to 88mph triggering the flux capacitor that projected it into the future )or the past)
