AMC Rambler Ambassador (6th Gen) (1967-68) Engine 343 cu in (5620cc) V8
Registration Number NOP 87 F (Birmingham)

The Ambassador was the top-of-the-line automobile produced by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1958 until 1974. The vehicle was known as the AMC Ambassador, Ambassador V-8 by Rambler, and Rambler Ambassador at various times during its tenure in production. Previously, the name Ambassador had applied to Nash's "senior" full-size cars.

The sixth generation was introduced in 1967 completely restyled longer, lower, and wider than before and built on a 118 inch wheelbase. The Ambassador was positioned in the standard-size category, against traditional big cars such as Ford Galaxie, Chevrolet Impala, and Plymouth Fury
For 1968, the Ambassador came with all weather air conditioning as s 218tandard (coutesy of the Kelvinator refrigerator division), though customers could order cars without air as a "delete option" which reduced the standard price by $ 218
Styling changes were minor. Taillights were now recessed in body-color bezels that were divided by a single central horizontal bar. Front headlight bezels were now made of nylon and similarly body colored. A new injection molded ABS plastic grille was dominated by a horizontal bar that extended forward in the center from the sides, while its outline had squared off edges that wrapped forward into the inner headlight extensions, marker lights were added to the wings at the front and rear as standard equipment, as the U.S. regulations mandated, along with seat belts.

The sixth generation was replaced for 1969 by a seventh generation

AMC Gremlin X (1970-78) Engine 303.8 cu in (4983cc)AMC304 V8

The AMC Gremlin (also American Motors Gremlin, is a sub compact available only as a two door, designed by Dick Teague and Bob Nixon. Using a shortened Hornet platform and bodywork with a pronounced kammback tail, the Gremlin was classified as an economy car and competed with the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto, as well as imported cars including the Volkswagen Beetle and Toyota Corolla. The Gremlin reached a total production of 671,475 over a single generation. It was superseded by a restyled and revised variant, the AMC Spirit from 1979 to 1983. Teague's idea of using the pony car Javelin resulted in the AMX-GT concept, first shown at the New York International Auto Show in April 1968 the model did not go into production but laid the foundation of the Gremlin. Instead, Bob Nixon, AMC's future Chief of Design, designed the new subcompact based on the automaker's Hornet model, a compact car. The design reduced the wheelbase from 108 to 96 inches and overall length from 179 to 161 in making the Gremlin just two inches longer than the Volkswagen Beetle.

The Gremlin was introduced on 1st April 1970 vailable as a "base" two-passenger version with no rear seat and a fixed rear window, at a suggested retail price of $1,879, and as a four-seat hatchback with an opening rear window, at $1,959. The upright design of the tail, which enlarged interior space, was aerodynamically efficient and in design terms ahead of its time.

The Gremlin debuted in April 1970 with AMC's 199 cu in (3.3 L) I6, a seven main bearing design which produced 128 hp as the standard model, with AMC's 232 cu in (3.8 L) I6 - producing 145 hp (108 kW; 147 PS) - as an option. For the 1971 model year the "X" appearance/equipment trim package was introduced as a $300 option on the 4-passenger model, it included body side tape stripes, body color front fascia, slotted road wheels with D70x14 Goodyear Polyglas tires, blackout grille insert, bucket seats, and "X" decals. The previously optional 232 cu in (3.8 L) I6 engine became standard in 1971, and a longer stroked 258 cu in (4.2 L) version became the option. One of the changes for 1972 was the optional introduction of a 304 cu in (5.0 L) V8 engine. It was "the muscle car formula of stuffing a big motor in a small car." The base two-seater model was discontinued For 1973 all American cars had to have the strengthened low impact bumpers able to withstand a 5mph bump. The X package received a new tape-striping pattern that kicked up over the Gremlin's rear-wheel flares.

For 1974 there was deeper front facia giving the car a longer appearance. A larger front bumper was mounted on self-restoring telescoping gas and oil cylinders. The rear fascia was modified slightly to blend with the design changes. The Gremlin X stripe pattern was given a "hockey stick" look for 1974: the stripes followed the window line as it tapered aft, and swept up now to include four diagonal lines on the wide C-pillar

Designed by Richard A Teague The rounded shape and large glass area were unusual compared with the three-box designs of the era, with a width equal to full-sized domestic vehicles, led AQMC t0o promote the car as the first wide small car.The body surface was 37 percent glass, its styling was described variously as Jellybean, The Flying Fishbowl and the seventies answer to George Jetson's mode of transportation. Teague's low-drag design, had a drag coefficient of 0.43 low for its the time, however the use of so much glass resulted in a heavy car which adversely affected fuel consumption

A 1976 AMC Pacer Hatchback was used in the 1992 movie Wayne's World, and again in the 1993 movie Wayne's World 2. The Pacer used in both movies was painted bright blue with flame decals, he car used an AMC 258 cu in (4.2 L) six-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. After sitting unused for over 20 years, the car was restored to the same specifications as in the movie. The body of the Pacer was stripped and repainted, the wheels were re-chromed, and the interior was re-covered, all to match the specifications of the screen car. The car was sold for $37,000 at the 2016 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Las Vegas, Nevada

Produced by American Motors Corporation the AMX was built as a two seat steel bodied muscle car. One inch shorter than the rival Chevrolet Corvette.
Built with the object of attracting younger customers into the AMC showrooms which it did but this was not reflected in AMX sales and the model was dropped after 3 years. Top of the range was a 390cu (6.4ltr V8)
The 1970 model received a minor facelift featuring a new front end with longer bonnet, with fashionable cold air RAM induction available on the 390 and 360cu models. 1970 saw the introduction of the 360cu (5.9 ltr) engine which produced 290bhp through its four barrel carburettor and continued to be upgraded to 325bhp

The 7th generation Ambassador received major restyling and a 122 inch wheelbase. and a track of 60 inches
The front end appearance was revised with new quad headlight clusters mounted horizontally in a new molded plastic grille, with the centre of the bonnet raised to accomodate the grilles raised portion. With annual updates for 1970 and 1971.
The 1972 model was backed by the industries first 12 month or 12,000-mile (19,000 km) bumper-to-bumper warranty, together with the supply of a free loan car if a warranty repair took overnight. The car now had standard electric wind screen wipers replacing the previous vacuum wipers as well as better interior trims. A six cylinder model was no longer available making the whole range V8. making the Ambassador the only volume-produced American car that included air conditioning, an automatic transmission, and a V8 engine as standard equipment; The Borg-Warner transmission was replaced by the "Torque-Command" (TorqueFlite) three-speed automatic sourced from Chrysler.
Styling changes on the 1972 Ambassador were limited to a new crosshatch cast metal grille with bright trim and new integrated fender extension mounted side marker lamps on the front.
