Crossley 25-30 (1918) Engine 4577cc S4
Registration Number BK 3298 (Portsmouth)

Crossley of Manchester provided more than 9000 vehicles to the war office during the four years of WW1, most of which were model 20-25 or 25-30 hp, following impressive performances in War Department trials in 1913. Noted for being well built and reliable, their large four cylinder engines had two blocks of two cylinders, and a five bearing crankshaft. Rear wheels with duplicated rims delivered extra traction from high pressure tyres in the difficult conditions.
The same chassis was also used for staff cars, laudauletes and ambulances as well as other types of military usage.

Crossley FWD 44x4 Fire Tender (1939-45)
CROSSLEY SET
www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157623664865785...

The onset of World War Two brought with an urgent need for the RAF to update and strengthen its airfield fire fighting equippment. The four wheel drive Crossley was introduced to replace fire tenders that would prove inadequate in the event of airfield attack or landing fires in damaged aircraft.

The FWD capacity allowed access to all areas of the airfield and wider perimeters, and while water alone would prove useless and even spread burning aviation fuel, the tender tackled an aircraft fire in two ways. Firstly with carbon dioxide gas which would clear a path through the flames enabling the rescue crew to rapidly get to and retrieve trapped aircew, secondly the main pump would prepare a mixture of Saponin, water and air which when sprayed as foam would smother the flames.

The firefighters however were not well protected apart from one or two fire resistant suits which were carried aboard the tender for rescue work, their only protection would be an asbestos veil worn with the standard steel helmet.

The tender would be crewed by a five man team, who would remain with the vehicle on alert, parked near the main air strip while flying was in progress

Many thanks for a fantabulous
