Alfa Romeo Badge
ALFA ROMEO SET
www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157623759785842...
The badge has changed a number of times since Alfa was founded in 1910. The badge is based on the coat of arms of the Visconti family. Legend has it that in the 5th century a man eating serpent was terrorising the citizens of Milan, it was killed by Ottoni Visconti and his deeds were celebrated on the coat of arms. The Red Cross on White background celebrates another local hero Giovanni Da Rio who was said to have scaled the walls of Jerusalem and erected the cross during the first crusade. Alfa is an acronym of A.L.F.A. - Anomina Lombardo Fabrica Automobili (Lombarda car making company) the companies original name and the earlier badges would have featured Milano beneath. In 1915 the company was taken over by Nicola Romeo and the badge was changed to read Alfa Romeo in 1920. In 1925 a wreath was added to celebrate the companies sporting victories which has since evolved to the Gold outer rim and in 1972 following the opening of the facilities in the South of Italy the word Milano was dropped.

Designed by Carlo Chitti and Robert Choulet, the 179 made its debut at the 1979 Italian Grand Prix, replacing the flat-12 engined Alfa Romeo 177. During the 179's lifespan the car was adapted a number of times, the last version being the 179D racing as late as 1982 in the South African Grand Prix.

Alfa Romeo RL (1922-27) Engine 2996cc S6 Production 2640 (all types)

The Alfa Romeo RL was produced between 1922-1927, and was Alfa's first sport model after World War I. The car was designed in 1921 by Giuseppe Merosi. It had a straight-6 engine with overhead valves. Three different versions were made: Normale, Turismo and Sport.
The RLTF (Targa Florio) was the race version of RL - it weighed half of normal versions, the engine had seven main bearings instead of four and double carburetors. In 1923 Alfa's race team had drivers like Ugo Sivocci, Antonio Ascari, Giulio Masetti and Enzo Ferrari. Sivocci's car had green cloverleaf symbol on white background and when he won Targa Florio 1923, that symbol was to become the Alfa team's good luck token.
The first Targa Florio cars were built in 1923, powered by a 3154cc S6 of 95bhp, in 1924 there were two different power plants, the one in this car, a 2994cc S6 of 90bhp, and a 3620cc S6 of 125bhp

Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Sport (1928-29) Engine 1487cc S6 DOHC Production 171
Registration Number UL 1489
ALFA ROMEO SET

n the mid-1920s, Alfa's RL was considered too large and heavy, so a new development began. The 2-liter formula that had led to Alfa Romeo winning the World Championship in 1925, changed to 1.5 liter for the 1926 season. The 6C1500 was introduced in 1925 at Milan, production started 1927, with the P2 Grand Prix car as starting point. Engine capacity was now 1487 cc, against the P2's 1987 cc, while supercharging was dropped. First versions were bodied by Young and Touring.
In 1928 the 6C Sport was released with a dual overhead camshafts engine. Its sport version won many races, including the 1928 Mille Miglia. Total production was 3000 (171 as the DOHC Sport model).
This has been in the same family ownership since 1961. Robert James Anderson took 41 years restoring the car back to its former glory, finishing the project in 2002. Then spent a number of years touring with it, sadly he passed away in 2010 and his family, kindly to the decision to loan the car long term to the Donington Collection.

Th 6C-1500 engine was originally developed in response a change in racing regulations after the 1925 season, in which Alfa Romeo had won the Automobile World Championship with their 2 litre RL. For 1925 rule changes ruled a maximum capacity if 1500cc for 1926.

The 6C 1500 was introduced in 1925 at the Milan Motor Show. With Series production begining in 1927. Engines were available either normally aspirated or supercharged and with a single or double overhead cam in five states of tune.

The 6C-1550 was replaced from 1929 by the more powerful 6C-1750

This when painted red has appeared in the 1980's TV Series The Bretts about a 1920s-1930s theatrical family
