Cord 810 Westchester (1935-35) Engine 4730cc V8
A case of what might have been. In nine years Errett Lobban Cord had risen from unemployment to heading his own organisation with assests running to millions of dollars. The Empire included Auburn, Duesenberg and Lycoming under the banner of the Cord corporation. The previous car to bear the Cord name had been the L29, America's first popular front wheel drive car.
The design of the 810 by Gordon M. Buehrig was a sensation with it's coffin nose, hidden head lights and fuel filler and rear hinged doors. the car was powered by a 4739 cc Lycoming V8 engine of 125bhp with three speed semi-automatic transmission plus an overdrive, mounted at the front of the engine. it had an engine turned dashboard and a radio (not a standard fitment in other cars until the 1950's). The new car caused a sensation at the 1935 (November) New York Motor Show, attracting crowds so deep people were climbing on other cars to get a view. Many orders were taken. But Cord had rushed to complete the 100 cars required for entry in the show, and the transmissions were not ready. Even so Cord were taking orders and deposits promising Christmas delivery, anticipating production of 1000 cars a week. The semi-automatic transmission proved more troublesome than expected and by Christmas no deliveries had been made. Demands for refunds followed, in all Cord managed to sell only 1174 cars in its first model year 1936.
By 1937 the 812 Supercharged car was launched with brilliant chrome external exhausts on each side but it was to late to save Cord

Cord 810 Beverley (1936-37) Engine 289 cu in (4739cc) Lycoming V8

The Cord 810 was designed by Gordon m Buehrig as the first American front wheel drive car with independant suspension. With a semi-automatic four speed transmission (three + overdrive). The lack of drive shaft allowed for a low design without running boards, other novel features included hidden door hinges, rear hinged bonnet, full pontoon wings with retractable head lights (operated by hand cranks on the dash), concealed filler cap, two speed wipers (at a time when wipers of any type were rare) and most strikingly a wrap around (coffin nosed) grille. Internally a tachometer and radio came as standard. Introduced as the sensation of the 1935 New York Auto Show (in November) orders flooded in with delivery promised for Christmas although no cars were yet available. Delayed by a the troublesome semi-auto gearbox only 1174 cars were sold in the 1936 model year all with teething troubles.

The Super charged 812 was made available for 1937 with chromium plated external exhaust pipes
The 810/812 was plagued by warranty problems of slipping gears and vapour lock resulting in the demise of the dealer network and many unsold cars which in turn led to Auburn ceasing production of Cord in 1937 and the sale of Cord to the aviation Corporation
