The company was founded by Thomas Aveling and Richard Thomas Porter to develop a steam engine in 1861. Three years later in 1865 they were producing more steam machines than the combined output of all other British manufacturers. The production include Road Rollers, Traction Engines and agricultural machinery. In 1919 the company joined the Agricultural and General Engineers combine (AGE). Production of the steam wagon was transferred to Richard Garrett and Son. In 1932 AGE went into receivership bringing down Aveling and Porter with it.
A rescue part funded by Ruston Hornsby of Lincoln combine Aveling and Porter with Barford and Perkins with Aveling and Porter continuing to make Steam Rollers but involved a move from its traditional home in Rochester, Kent to Granthan, Lincolnshire under the name Aveling Barford, continuing to make steam and motor rollers well into the 1950's the company has since become better known for construction vehicle particulary Dumper Trucks
The Prancing Horse and Invicta motif of the badge refer to the companies beginnings in Kent. Ivicta being the motto of Kent and the Prancing Horse and motif and both feature in the counties coat of arms.

New to Lorenzo Fuller of Dartford, Kent, the engine was sold at auction in 1924 to G E Gates a threshing contractor. Bought in 1959 by Val Dunnett of London and first steamed again in 1999.. Bought by present owner in 2002.
