ATS 100 (1963/64) Engine 1497cc
In 1961 the sharknose Ferrari had been the dominant car and their American driver Phil Hill had claimed the drivers championship. Inside the team it was a different matter and at the end of the season there had been a mass defection of personnel who vowed to beat Ferrari with their new project the ATS. Drivers Phil Hill and Giancarlo Baghetti joined the project which was headed by Carlo Chitti the car was hastily prepared and powered by an in house V8 engine and with extremely short chassis. The Team missed the first GP of the 1963 at Monaco, making their debut at the Belgian GP in Spa. the cars qualified 17th and 20th and both retired early from the race. Hill qualified better for the Dutch Grand Prix but lost a wheel in the race, The team did not appear for the French and British GP's and failed to make Germany after the transporter crashed. In Italy Hill finished 13 laps behind the victor and in Watkins Glen (USA) and Mexico both cars retired.
For the following season the project was taken up by Alf Francis, Stirling Moss' former mechanic in association with Valerio Colotti, a Maseratti chassis engineer and by manufacturer Vic Derrington the result was this Derrington-Francis ATS 100 campaigned in 1964 by Portuguese driver Mario Araujo de Cabral
