Ashley Laminates were founded by Peter Pallandine and Keith Waddington in 1956 and originally produced fibreglass bodies for sportscar conversions of Austin Sevens and Ford 8s. With the arrival of the Mark 1 Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite they began producing hardtop and lightweight bonnets, for the A-H Sprite Mk, 2 and MG Midget Mk. 1 they produced a lower sleeker hardtop a new bonnet was introduced with a bigger air intake and a central power-bulge, later still versions included a bootlid with small spoiler In the mid-60s Keith Waddington died and the company continued to make hardtops and bonnets until its demise in 1972.

In late 1956 Pellandine left the company to found Falcon Shells, another specials company. Pellandine took with him the rights and tooling to manufacture the short-wheelbase bodyshell for the Ashley 750 and the Sports Racer which he continued in production as the Falcon Mark 1 and Mark 2 respectively.
In 1958 in order to increase their production capacity Ashley Laminates, moved from Loughton, Essex to new premises in the Potteries, Staffordshire, while still retaining the old premises as a showroom. Ashley was a pioneering manufacturer of fibreglass body shells and chassis for specials from 1955 to 1972, offered in a range of configurations from roadsters, sports-racers to GTs - primarily to cater for the self-build enthusiast market. It was during the later period of the company`s history that the Ashley GT conversion was conceived to turn the ubiquitous BMC powered `Spridget` into a full `Gran Turismo`. In deference to products by other manufacturers, such as the Lenham, the Ashley GT conversion featured a dual purpose roadster/GT application that could be swapped over with minimal effort. Needless to say, the Ashley turned out to be an extremely popular option.
This MG Midget was built at Abingdon in June 1964, and the first recorded owner was a Mr. Chris Peacock, who was the last works manager at the MG car works at Abingdon. It remained in its standard MG specification for a number of years. It is not clear when the car recieved the Ashley conversion but it may have been as late as 1993 when the car was subject to a major rebuild that included the fitting of sills and A-pillars. It was rediscovered after years of storage in 2010 and sent to the reformed Ashley Works for a major refurbishment which involved the car being fully stripped, repainted and re-trimmed.
