The Flint Automobile Company of Flint, Michigan was founded by A B S Hardy in 1901to produce the 8hp two seater Roadster which came with tiller steering as a left or right hand drive position. Only 52 vehicles were produced, priced at $750-$850 before the company went out of business in 1903. With Hardy apparently unwilling to pay the Selon patent.
George Baldwin Selden (September 14, 1846 – January 17, 1922) was an American patent lawyer and inventor from New York who was granted a U.S. patent for an automobile in 1895. In 1899 he sold his patent rights to William C. Whitney, who proposed manufacturing electric-powered taxicabs for a royalty of US$15 per car with a minimum annual payment of US$5,000. The two then worked together to collect royalties from other budding car manufacturers He was initially successful, negotiating a 0.75% royalty on all cars sold by the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers.
The Flint Automobile Company, should not be confused with Flint (automobiles). Flint (automobiles were active 1923-27, confusingly also based in Flint Michigan but had no conection with the former. Flint (Automobiles) was a wholly owned subsiduary of Durrant Motor Company. Following financial troubles at Durant Motors, the Flint was discontinued in 1927.
