This is a photo of a giant atlas moth and is a first for me. Native to Southeast Asia, these moths live only two to three weeks and their sole purpose in life is to mate. When they hatch, their mouthes are undeveloped and they do not eat - only mate. They are quite large, with wings averaging up to 12 inches in width. This one was larger than my camera! It resided in the large butterfly house of the Long Island Aquarium. The photo was taken in August 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

This is the next shot in my "Rainy Day Monarch Series." Throughout our day at Van Dusen Gardens, we experienced showers off and on. If you look carefully, you can see rain drops in the background. There is even a big drop of water on the butterfly's back. The shot was taken in July 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

This is another one of my attempts to photograph a butterfly in flight. Sometimes butterflies surprise you. I expected this one to lift off and go either left or right to adjacent flowers. Instead, this fellow lifted off and flew directly at me :) Eventually, it flew over my head. The photo was taken in March 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

I photographed this backlit white admiral near Boundary Bay last summer. As I have observed elsewhere, I find that the admirals are less skittish than other butterflies. This one agreed to pose for me. :) I am heading back to Boundary Bay tomorrow to look for more butterflies. The photo was taken in July 2013, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

I took this shot of a tiger swallowtail during our visit to the Okanagan Valley late last summer. We decided to take a short break from our demanding wine tasting tour :) to see if we could photograph some local wildlife. We found a a park near an agricultural research station The station was surrounded by apple orchards (a valley specialty). During the summer, conditions are usually pretty dry in the valley, so we were pleasantly surprised to discover a small glen filled with flowers, hummingbirds and butterflies. :) After about an hour, we were visited by a park ranger who asked us to make more noise because there were four bears in the adjacent apple orchard heading our way!. We decided discretion was the better part of valour. :) The photo was taken in August 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.
