This is a photo of a giant atlas moth and is a first for me. Native to Southeast Asia, these moths live only two to three weeks and their sole purpose in life is to mate. When they hatch, their mouthes are undeveloped and they do not eat - only mate. They are quite large, with wings averaging up to 12 inches in width. This one was larger than my camera! It resided in the large butterfly house of the Long Island Aquarium. The photo was taken in August 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

On my recent trip to Maui, I came across a colony of Monarch butterflies. I discovered this pair locked in a passionate embrace high on a branch late one afternoon. The photo was taken in February with an Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

This is the next shot in my monarchs of VanDusen series. On the day of the shoot, there were showers off and on throughout the day. However, the butterflies did not care and continued to feed! If you look closely, you can see several flattened raindrops on the butterfly's back. The photo was taken in July 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

I took this photo on my last visit to the Amazon live butterfly exhibit at the Vancouver Aquarium. If anyone can identify this butterfly species, please let me know. Thanks. The photo was taken in December 2012, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.

Since Hurricane Sandy I haven't seen as many butterflies in the gardens of Great River. However, I did come across this tiger swallowtail (the only one I saw all day). Evidently, some of the smaller butterfly species are more numerous. It was windy on the day of the shoot, so I took the photo at very high speed. The shot was taken in August 2014, with my trusty Olympus digital camera. Enjoy.
