Not only is this section of the Long Island Rail Road amazingly cool looking, but it is also part of the first route laid down by the LIRR....

First off lets congragulate the Long Island Rail Road on 175 years of existence (LIRR holds the title of the oldest railroad still operating under its original name in the united States) and then take in account that they are the busiest commuter railroad in the United States...I think those both qualify the LIRR well worth a look....

Anyways we are on the Brooklyn to Jamaica portion of the LIRR...in April of 1832 the Brooklyn and Jamacia Railroad began construction on a route between a terminal up against the East River in Brooklyn and Jamacia about ten miles to the east...two years later in April of 1834 the Long Island Rail Road was chartered and then in 1836 this line was leased to the LIRR....

From Flatbush Ave. (present day terminal in Brooklyn) to Jamacia the line is mostly underground...but the portion I am shooting on is the only elevated structure on this line (elevated in 1903)...if you were to look at the elevated structure from the street you would see that it is very well built due to the LIRR providing freight service back in the day from Long Island over to Brooklyn....

In any event we are watching an equipment move on the Atlantic Ave. line at Nostrand Ave...I assume that the MU cars are going west to Flatbush Ave. for the upcomming rush hour as the first "peak" service eastbound departs Flatbush at 4:16 P.M. EST....

Alright...try and follow along....

We are in the Woodside neighborhood in Queens which is one of the five boroughs of New York City in the state of New York...got it?

What's more important is we are watching a Long Island Railroad commuter train fly eastbound through the station at Woodside (with Manhattan's Lower East Side as the backdrop) and my vantage point is courtesy of the "7" train's (IRT Flushing Line) station platform at 61st Street-Woodside....

Any questions?

More of the West Side Line....

An ariving northbound train meets a departing southbound at 125th Street on the IRT's West Side line...now part of the "1" train's service up to 242nd Street....

What makes 125th Street in Manhattan interesting is that both to the north and to the south the line is a subway...the only reason why this station is elevated is because Broadway Ave. dips into a deep valley...instead of dealing with a steep grade underground the IRT decided to jump skyward....

One of three "shuttle" designated trains is awaits to take on commuters at the Grand Central Station subway terminal....

This was once part of a through-routing in the NYC Subway...the present day 4,5 and 6 lines to the south and the 1,2 and 3 to the north were connected in the middle by the Times Square/Grand Central Station shuttle...nowadays the 1,2 and 3 continue south to South Ferry and the 4,5 and 6 continue to three different terminals in The Bronx....
