Headstone to 9-year-old George Beloe, St Nicholas' churchyard, Great Yarmouth.
On 2 May 1845, a large crowd had gathered on the suspension bridge over the river Bure to watch a popular clown called Arthur Nelson sail up the river in a washing tub pulled by geese, to publicise the arrival of a circus. Tragically, as the clown approached, the crowd surged to the side of the bridge and one of the supporting chains snapped, precipitating hundreds into the water. 78 people died, most of them children under 16.
