Scanned slide taken 01/02/91: Heading back into London after visiting the Tilbury Riverside spur, my next stop was the Docklands Light Railway, a line that was expanding rather than one that was due to close. At the time the DLR comprised of two branches, one from Tower Gateway and one from Stratford that met at Poplar Junction and then terminated at the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs at Island Gardens. In this view of Tower Gateway station, the throat of Fenchurch Street Station is on the right and P89 No. 13, part of a batch of ten units built by BREL Derby in 1989/90, is on the left. Unlike the original P86 stock, the P89s were equipped with sufficient fire-proofing to operate through the tunnels of the Bank extension. The P89s remained in operation on the DLR until 1995, before being sold on to Essen, where they entered service between 1999 and 2004 after modifications to add pantographs and a driver’s compartment.

Scanned slide taken 01/02/91: At the time Island Gardens was the southern terminus of the DLR and in this view looking north the sky line is dominated by Canary Wharf which is surrounded by buildings in the course of construction. Since then not only has Island Gardens Station been rebuilt, but the sky line is much changed.
