The Class 158 Express Sprinter units were built by British Rail Enginerring Limited between 1989 and 1992 and became a mainstay of secondary express services between provincial towns and cities. When BR split into sectors prior to privatisation, the majority of the fleet came under the control of the Regional Railways division.

Scan of a slide taken in 1993: my interest at that time was mo where near prolific enough to say how long the Regional Railways livery with 'Sprinter' branding lasted. In a way I'm surprised that 'Sprinter' was deemed marketable as a term, but I guess these units have stood the test of time. The 150/2 sub class had front-end gangway connections
