Taken from a trackside vantage point my notes show this as being "on the other line", maybe the former N&W main through Salem.
Fairly new C44-9W's 9165 & 9158 look smart on this westbound set of mixed hoppers, and I remember that photographing these locos was a primary objective for the trip, 24.03.98.

By late afternoon the skies had begun to break, and this westbound merchandiser had a varied mix of power.
Leading was newish C44-9W 9100, then elderly C30-7 8013, with GP38AC 4159 bringing up the rear.
I'm not completely certain where in Salem this is, and possibly the train is on the old Virginian mainline through town, 24.03.98.
