This is my wonderful son, Logan. He is a very special young man in many ways. He loves birds, sports, word search puzzles, math and bowling. He is special in another way. He is autistic and mentally challenged. Autism is a speech, language, social disorder. I admire Logan's ability to navigate in a world that is often bewildering, frightening, sometimes kind, and sometimes hostile to him. But most of all, I admire the fact that he accepts people at face value. He just likes people. He does not care how much money they earn, what kind of job they hold, what their race or religion is, or what they look like. I often think the world would be a better place if we all had a bit of Logan in us. If you run across a special needs person, be kind. I think the hardest thing for these special people is feeling like they don't fit in, and being marginalized. Just say "hi."
