A welcoming partry of a mama quail and her ten chicks greeted us upon our arrival at Cuchillo. The Old Cuchillo Bar and Store has seen so much life over it's time. The original building in 1850 featured rough boards and hand-hewn vigas and thick adobe layers for insulation. A tin roof was later added to protect the building from the elements. In 1883 it was adapted for a post office. A boarding house, a saloon, a store all added to the changes. A devastating fire in 2000 left the building vulnerable and open to the weathers. It's said the bar still contains many of the original artifacts. It does appear to be for sale. I looked for someone to ask about it's history but was completely out of luck. Now peace and tranquility are the most notable when you arrive here.
