In 1789 inhabitants of an ancient settlement now called Los Lentes built this capilla (little chapel). It is dedicated to the Franciscan friar San Antonio. History and traditions surrounding the chapel have been handed down through generations, and even today those traditions are basically unchanged. Two couples are appointed every year as mayordomos (stewards) who are charged to keep the chapel clean and the planning of the feast of San Antonio which is celebrated mid-June. Over the years parishioners have made large scale improvements and renovations, such as the galvanized roof, rough benches being replaced by private pews , and a wooden laid down over the packed dirt floor in 1912. Tide altars were added in 1926. The bell, dedicated in 1893, is still rung for fiestas. More recently extensive renovations have been carried out inside and out and the roof replaced. The result being this magnificent capilla you see now.

Nothing looks better than freshly picked chililes and there's nothing nicer than the smell of them roasting...and then there's the taste! Viva New Mexico Chile Festival Los Lunas.

I like quirky. I'm guessing someone salvaged a bell tower from somewhere. I'm glad they found a use for it.

Descanso means rest or resting place.
I have posted many pictures of descansos. A memorial placed of where a loved one breathed his or her last. All too often you see these here in New Mexico, placed at the roadside to mark the scene of an accident where a loved one died. Always sad to see and even more so when it is someone so young.

RIP in Florence Padilla.
