The flag of New Mexico consists of the Zia sun symbol on a field of yellow.
The Zia symbol represents the sun and is regarded as sacred by the Zia Indians of New Mexico. Their symbol for the sun, a red circle with groups of rays pointing in four directions. Four is the sacred number of the Zia and is seen repeated in the four points radiating from the circle, each consisting of four bars. To the Zia Indians, the number four represents, the four points of the compass north south east and west; the four seasons of the year spring, summer, autumn, and winter; the four periods of each day, morning, noon, evening, and night; the four seasons of life, childhood, youth, middle years, and old age; the Zia's belief that with life comes four sacred obligations: one must develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of others.
Zia pronounces it "tSEE-ah." Zia Pueblo is located 35 miles northwest of Albuquerque, NM.
It always looks stunning against the blue sky of New Mexico.

We rescued her from the dog pound 2 years last December. She had been picked up as a stray and was nothing more than a 3 pound bag of bones. She has turned out to be one of the cutest and funniest dogs ever. She now weighs in at 6 pounds so still tiny but not so much a bag of bones. She always makes me smile and makes an ideal Z for alphabet weekly.

Yuccas have specialized and unique pollination system. The yucca moth pollinates them by carefully and deliberately transferring the pollen from the stamen of one plant to the stigma of another. At the same time the moth lays an egg in the flower. Many yuccas have edible parts, including fruits, seeds, flowers, stems, and sometimes the roots. Dried yucca wood has the lowest ignition temperature of any wood, which makes it desirable for starting fires. The flower of the yucca is the state flower of New Mexico. Sadly not in bloom at this time of the year.
