The marvelous spatuletail has been assessed as endangered since 2000. Its population is thought to be smaller than 1000 mature individuals.

This species was incredibly difficult to find. The bird was only discovered in 1976 and was then not seen again until 2002. Even to this day very few people have had good looks at it.
