In 2006, the boxwoods were easy to spot in the snow-covered cemetery. The fieldstone seen in the foreground is for Pvt. Elias Powell, CSA who was killed by Union cavalry scouts in 1862.

Ten years later, the boxwoods are a little bigger and without the snow, the periwinkle commonly used in cemeteries is evident. Note that two new markers have been added including the grave of Pvt. Elias Powell.

From an AP article posted in spring 2006:

"For years, two Confederate brothers' graves sat with simple markings in the same cemetery.
Now, distant kin of the Powell brothers and a Civil War heritage group are changing that. They are getting headstones from the U-S Department of Veterans Affairs to properly recognize the brothers' deaths.

Elkton historian Casey Billhimer says recognizing the brothers
is the least we can do after they gave their lives fighting.Elias Powell was killed by federal scouts in October 1862. Two years later, "William" Albert Powell was killed in action. Both
were laid to rest in the Hensley, Shifflett, Powell Cemetery on the side of a mountain now part of the Shenandoah National Park. Their graves were marked with rocks turned into tombstones engraved with their initials and date of death.
The new tombstones will have their names, dates of birth and
death and short histories about each."

In a return to the cemetery in 2016, the markers had been installed.

Elias' new marker sits directly in front of his old one.

Albert's old marker lies on the ground behind the new one.
