Benton Spillway, River Preserve County Park

In the wild prairies and forests nestled beside the Elkhart River, the people gathered. They spoke in different tongues - the languages of the Potawatomi, Colonial French, and the
diverse dialects of settlers from northern lands. Some would battle for the land, with the roar of flintlock and cannon fire ringing out through the prairie. Others would come for trade,
exchanging furs, handmade wares, wool, and treasures from their homelands.

The event is named after Five Medals, a Potawatomi leader and a village named after the leader, which was located near the event site. Five Medals became a prominent leader who met with Presidents Washington and Jefferson to lobby for an improvement in Native and American relations. The village itself was attacked during the war of 1812 by a contingent of U.S. troops and burned the village in 1812 and once again in 1813. Part of the Gathering of Five Medals is a presentation that chronicles the life of Five Medals in the recreated Woodland Native Village.
