A Rare Fine
Coronado Historic Site and the ruins of Kuaua Pueblo. In 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado—with 500 soldiers and 2,000 Indian allies from New Spain—entered the Rio Grande valley somewhere near this site. Coronado was searching for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. Instead of treasure, he found a dozen villages inhabited by prosperous native farmers. These newly "discovered" people spoke Tiwa, and their ancestors had already been living in this area for thousands of years. Coronado called them: Los Indios de los Pueblos or Pueblo Indians. He and his men visited all twelve Tiwa villages during the course of the next two years because they survived on food and other supplies that they obtained from them. Without the assistance of the Tiwas (willing or unwilling), Coronado and his men very likely would have starved to death.

Tiquex is a province of twelve pueblos, on the banks of a large & mighty river. Some of the pueblos are on one bank, some on the other. It is a spacious valley two leagues wide. To the east there is a snow-covered sierra, very high & rough."
Pedro de Castaneda - 1540
The Spanish Conquistadors occupied one of the pueblos in the Tiguex Province during the winters of 1540-41 & 1541-42. This pueblo, Kuaua, is believe to be the northernmost village of the Tiquex Province, & it was undoubtedly visited by the Spanish.
At first the Tiqua people welcomed the visitors & submitted to their demands for food, shelter & clothing. However, demands of the army became unbearable. The Tiguas staged a desperate revolt against the Spanish invaders in the winter of 1540-41. The results were disastrous for the pueblo people. Two villages were destroyed & many of the people killed.

The Pueblo of Kuaua was inhabited from about 1,300 to 1,600. During the late 1930s archaeologists unearthed approximately 1,200 rooms of the village. There are many more which remain unexcavated.
The walls you see in front of you are not original. They were constructed in the 1840s to give an idea of the extent of the ancient pueblo.
The excavation of this pueblo were undertaken in the 1930s within a plan to identify places where significant parts of New Mexico's history & prehistory could be interpreted & then excavated, preserve & interpret them to visitors. By 1940, the Coronado State Monument visitor center & reconstructed ruin walls, using WPA labor, were a tribute to these efforts.
