So, Jerome was first a 'boom copper mining town', with many ways to fleece the miners.
Then the city pretty much dried up to nothing. Supposedly discovered by hippies in the 1960s, then artists, who now run the historical society and some touristy retail outlets.
What would you do? Millions of people visit Arizona annually, and you want them to visit. Build a narrative!
I'm certain that town was pretty wild @ 1900.
The artists living there now [and a woman artist lives and has a gallery in what is the House of Joy] had great fun presenting the town.
Apparently it has had some play as a 'Hollywood/TV ghost town.
The setting of Jerome is terrific just on the edge of a national forest, and I had fun exploring the place.

The sculptress, Heloise Christa, arrived at Frank Llyod Wrigth's Talesin West to apprentice in architecture. She instead learned to sculpt, and the docent reported still resides there and works.
The primary deisgn value of the center is to design with nature. Arizona has rich earth tones to work with, as you can see. Those are wall of buildings made of stone and slate from the immediate area.
