Much of the present Chichester Cathedral dates from the 12th century.
The spire, added in 1400, collapsed on 17th February 1861: 'the spire was seen to incline slightly to the south west, then to descend perpendicularly into the church'. It was rebuilt by Gilbert Scott.

The choir stalls were provided by Bishop Langton in the 1330s and largely survived the fall of the spire in 1861.
The tapestry, seen in the centre distance and installed in 1966, was designed by John Piper (the first tapestry he had designed) and woven by Pinton Frères at Felletin near Aubusson in France.
