A wolf pup is learning the intense stare that I always notice in adult wolves.

This is taken on the Tolklat River in Denali National Park.

Jamie and I just got back from a weekend in Denali.

We'd heard that a pack of wolves had killed a dall sheep near where I Scream Gluch empties into the Tolkalt River.

We walked up the Tolklat. We saw an adult running across the river away from us. So we sat down on the cut back of the Tolklat and were waiting for his return. Suddenly we heard howling behind us. We went down stream trying to get a better vantage point for where we thought the howling was comming from. Suddenly 3 wolves, all pups suddenly came out of the willows and started playing with each other a little ove 50 yards away from us.

This is two of the playing pups. I probably snapped 300 photos in a span of 20 minutes or so until they ran off.

It's the eyes!!!!

I've been told a quote of a wolf researcher that I cannot name goes..."a wolf's eyes are mirrors to one's soul, hopefully you'll like what you see"

This encounter gave me a different take. I believe there is such a fire of intensity of their gaze that it etches its own mark on your soul. If it doesn't, you don't have a soul!

While he was staring at me, with the original 10,000 yard stare, I had no thoughts of world troubles, no thoughts of I was hungry or cold, no thoughts of any of my belongings, only what is that wolf going to do and what do I need to do!

Enthustiastic dogs lead out on the 2008 Yukon Quest. They have a 1000 miles of cold and mountains with which to contend.

The temperature at the start was -42 in a light ice fog. The dogs in back are obscured a bit by the snow spray from the leaders plus the added snow makes the ice fog reform.
