Dall sheep in Denali migrate from the inner ranges to the outer ranges in the fall. This group of Dall Ewes is crossing the Tolklat River to gain access to the outer range where the winter weather is not as severe.

The migration has its hazards, the sheep easily outpace bears and wolves on the steep mountain slopes but are vunerable in the lowlands.

A Dall Sheep Ewe crosses a new snow drift left by the snows of last weekend. And yes, the big blob of snow rolled off the cliff and hit the side of my car, made a perfectly good clean spot on the side of a totally dirty Honda but not to worry driving another 50 yards down the wet dirt road got that spot just as dirty as the rest of the car.

After 3 days of rain and snow, Monday broke clear and warmer, so our Monday trip into Denali was greeted with blue skies and wonderful vistas.

This Dall Sheep Lamb was making its first excursions on snow near PolyChrome Pass.

This is one of the reasons I like this time of year in Denali. The Dall Sheep are migrating from the outter ranges where they spend the winter to the inner ranges where they spend the summer. As a result, you frequently find them close to the road. For the rest of the summer they tend to look like rice with legs.
