Taken in the slough in Creamer's Field Bird Refuge Fairbanks Alaska.

I've always found these to be among the more exotic looking birds in Alaska.

I read in the local paper that a great horned owl was hanging around the bird banding station near Creamer's Field in Fairbanks. While I did find several mosquitos that I mistook for Great Horned Owls, I didn't find an actualy Great Horned Owl.

However, on the way back I did find this really nice looking and cooperative Horned Grebe, one of my favorites of the migrating water fowl.

I went to the peat pits in Goldstream Valley north of Fairbanks to see if the ice had melted out...it had!
