Opened in 1887 the Alnwick to Cornhill branch line always struggled to find passengers with the area being quite sparsely populated. In addition the geography dictated that a number of stations were at a distance from the village they served.
It lasted as a passenger line from 1887 to 1930, with freight traffic on this southern (Alnwick) section of the line finally ceasing in 1953.

The beginnings of spring are seen in the new leaves and the spreading carpet of ransoms (wild garlic, Allium ursinum) in Rugley Wood on the edge of Alnwick, though it was a grey and misty afternoon when this was taken.
And I got wet feet getting across to some mid-stream rocks for an unobstructed view.

Still some autumn leaves hanging on but the majority of trees are now 'skeletons'. unlike a month ago when this was taken in the pastures across the River Aln from the castle.
