The Denver Civic Center building was proposed in 1904 by the mayor but took almost 30 years to plan and complete because he could not convince the city leaders to build it. The project was finally started in 1919. After many years of design and construction, the final cornerstone was laid in 1932. The architectural style is Beaux-Arts neo-classical derived from historic motifs of ancient Greek and Roman architecture.

Colorado is a high altitude state encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains with an average elevation of 6,800 ft (2070 m). There are about 55 mountains which exceed 14,000 ft (4270 m). The air is usually pure and clear but severe drought conditions have resulted in many forest fires in Colorado and the western United States.
