'Birdcages', hidden away in Angel Place Sydney is a magical art installation where the artist, Michael Thomas Hill, has combined suspended birdcages accompanied by recorded sounds of the birds that once lived here.

Walking beneath these cages and hearing those beautiful sounds was both strange and soothing. For a brief moment the city wound its way back to a time of just bush land and bird call before the spell was broken and the city restored.

Thank you Ken for sharing with us this little gem in a big city.

Contemplating the Sunshine

Leafy Seadragons are beautiful creatures to gaze upon but not always easy to find.

As divers we swim around looking down at the sand, down at the seagrass, down at the sponges and sea-stars and other benthic critters.

This is not the best strategy for seeing a dragon where their intricate leafy body structure blends in with the yellow algae around which they live.

Instead you need to be very close to the bottom and look up towards the sun and just maybe in contemplating the sunshine you will separate a 'leafy' from the leafs.

Danger Overhead

Just like looking out for overhead power lines it pays to look up when diving.

We teach new divers that they should never put themselves into a position where they can not make an immediate ascent to the surface if they come into difficulty.

It's all very well to be taught to be a good dive buddy, to be vigilant and always at the ready to assist your dive buddy should a problem arise but how often is that vigilance really put to the test.

More often than not when a manageable crisis arises, divers head straight up regardless of their buddy.

So remember to look up, there may be danger overhead.

Overshadowed

As she cruised over my head the sun was eclipsed and the surrounding water came alive with thousands of mini silhouettes.

For a time she overshadowed them all with grace, girth and length before the sun reappeared and she was gone.

Yet another beautiful moment with a Broughton Island Grey Nurse shark.

Love Takes All Forms

There is no doubt at all in my mind that there is more here than the instinctual caring for a newborn child.

I watched her for a time and was enchanted by the way she nudged and guided and snuggled and swam with her beautiful baby.

In those privileged moments I fell in love with something strange and wild and so beautiful out here in this vast ocean.

These two extraordinary creatures showed me that deep binding love is not just a human thing but part of their world too.
