The anniversary of my Mother’s passing, Her Yartzeit, will begin with the lighting of her memorial candle at sundown on Tuesday, September 4th. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her joy in living, her goodness, her humor, her songs, and her skill as a first grade teacher. In thirty years she never had a student who didn’t learn to read!
When a pupil from another teacher was discovered to be unable to read, in the upper grades, her principal would ask Josie to teach him or her. She did so in her lunch hours. Years later when I spent my weekends helping my Mom and Dad in their final years, we were stopped Each Time in the supermarket in Staten Island by a person who would recognize my Mom and thank her for saving their life or a brother or sister’s or a cousin’s life, by teaching them read. I was in my late forties, and each time I was moved to tears.
