The Temple is not in the best of shape. It was built in 1964, a nice vernacular rendition of the International Style. The Jewish community in the area was much larger at one time although the building is still in use I get the impression maintenance is being deferred. The tower in the distance is the first of three luxury buildings being built in the area. Perhaps when it is finished it will infuse new life in this and the other religious institutions in the area.
Update 9/17: Plans have been announced to tear this down. A tower will be built in it's place and the Congregation will be given space in the new building. This is part of the swell in new projects in the Journal Square area.

The combination of brick and fieldstone was very popular in the 1960's. I like the grid of windows which probably give light to the sanctuary (I have never been in the building).

The stone tablets of the Decalogue are the only decoration on the street side. Centered in the fieldstone panel they are being encroached on by the evergreen shrubs. The slightly off center menorah was probably put up for Chanukah a few years ago.

Next to Congregation Sons of Israel on Cottage Street this building was built as a private Jewish High School. I don't know how or if it was associated with the Temple. I can not find any reference on line. It now houses medical offices.
