It's hard to tell in this photo, but the columns flanking the oven are covered in minuscule subway tiles, which create a shimmery effect. To make the most of the natural light, the designer chose a palette of white tones for the ship-lap (wide horizontal) siding, cabinetry, crown molding, ceiling, sink, and the island’s Michelangelo marble. The hardwood floors and mahogany cabinets installed on the periphery add a warm, natural contrast.

The galley kitchen of designer Phoebe Howard’s Atlanta apartment. Walls are painted Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White. Open shelves are from the Kitchen Source; dishwasher from Fisher & Paykel.
Says Howard: “Stools and a bar-height table rather than dining chairs and a regular 30-inch table keep it from feeling congested. There are no cabinets above the marble countertop, just chunky floating shelves wrapped in stainless steel, and an antiqued mirror in a tortoiseshell frame. I've always lived in old houses with windows above the kitchen sink — the mirror's the window I couldn't have here."

Glorious! In this Nantucket kitchen decorated by Sandi Holland, walls are painted Navajo White and cabinets are Tudor Brown, both by Benjamin Moore. Counters are Calcutta Gold marble.
“I'm a great believer in big islands,” says Holland. “The mistake people often make is putting the island and the counters too far apart. All you need is room for two people to pass.”

When New York interior designer Victoria Hagan bought her house, “a real fixer-upper” in Connecticut, she could see it had serious potential. The kitchen, with its view of Long Island Sound and an enormous old stove, was a space to fall for. But first it needed a makeover. “The most important things in a kitchen are function, quality of light and lots of surface space,” she said.
To increase all three, she raised the ceilings and installed new cabinets and Carrara marble countertops. She also refurbished the stove and added a V-groove board on the walls, to add “texture and verticality.” The farm sink and faucet are from Waterworks; the lighting is from Urban Archaeology. “I’ve designed some wonderful kitchens, but this is one I truly love,” Hagan said. “I like standing at my sink and watching the sun rise over the water.”
