These two preserved buses, in similar green liveries, are here on display at the Llangollen Classic Transport Weekend, Glyndyfrdwy Station, Wales, on 07/07/2024. On the left, in 'NBC' Leaf Green livery, is former Crosville, SNG588, JTU588T, a Gardner re-powered Leyland National 10351B/1R. New to Crosville, in 02/1979, numbered SNL588, it was one of the many to be repowered by a Gardner 6LXB engine during Crosville's tenure, while on the right, and powered by a Gardner LX engine, is preserved S.H.M.D. Board, 117, YLG717F, a rare Northern Counties bodied Bristol RESL6G. The Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Transport and Electricity Board(SHMD), what a grand title, always had a penchant for the unusual and in doing so, acquired six of these Northern Counties bodied Gardner powered Bristol RE's, 113-5, WMA113-5E, new in 07/1967, and 116-8, YLG716-8F, 116/7 being new in 08/1967 and 118 in 09/1967. S.H.M.D. was absorbed by SELNEC PTE in 1969 under the first phase of local government re-organisation, with this RE being transferred there. © Peter Steel 2024.

New to Crosville, numbered SNL588, in 02/1979, and re-fitted with a Gardner engine by Crosville, hence SNG fleet number designation, this National is seen here on display at Glyndyfrdwy Station, Wales, during the Llangollen Railway Classic Transport Weekend, on 07/07/2024. © Peter Steel 2024.

New to London Transport(LS58), in 08/1977, converted from dual-door to single-door configuration and preserved in it's last operators colours, a popular National operator, it is seen here departing from Rowsley South Station, at the end of the Nottingham Heritage Vehicles Charity Rally & Running Day at Peak Rail's H.Q., on 16/06/2024. After further restoration, it came back on the road during the latter part of 2023. Originally at first sight, I thought it was similar preserved sister OJD868R, former London Transport(LS68), new to London Transport in 06/1977. The Chase livery came after when they bought a bus from GM Buses. © Peter Steel 2024.

This immaculate National was built as a demonstrator in 10/1973. It is fitted with a flat floor throughout and was originally fitted with coach seating. Branded as a 'Suburban Express', it was Leyland's attempt to give good visibility throughout and an attempt to see if it would be suitable for 'coaching' express work. In the end, it was a one off as the standard National Mk.1 became available with 'DP' seating with several NBC operators, notably Crosville taking examples. Barrow Corporation Transport also took two 'DP' seated examples. This National is seen here on display at Rowsley South Station, during the Nottingham Heritage Vehicles Charity Rally & Running Day at Peak Rail's H.Q., on 16/06/2024. © Peter Steel 2024.
