Fifty of these were built, D400-49 - 50001-50, at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry Works, Newton-le-Willows from 1967 to 1968 and were also nicknamed Hoovers. They were built for the WCML express services on the non-electrified section being leased from English Electric and not acquired by BR until 1973. They later operated mainly between Paddington and the South-West. Eighteen have been saved for preservation. This particular example is owned by the Bury Valiant Group and is based at the East Lancashire Railway where it is seen here powering away from Ramsbottom during the railway's Summer Diesel Gala, on 28/06/2024. More can be found at www.50015.org. It is leading delayed Service 1J69 16:30 Heywood - Bury Bolton Street - Burrs Country Park - Summerseat - Ramsbottom - Rawtenstall, due to arrive at Rawtenstall at 17:33. This 50 was attached at Bury Bolton Street where Hymek D7076 and 'Warship' 832 were detached. © Peter Steel 2024.

Fifty of these were built, D400-49 - 50001-50, at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry Works, Newton-le-Willows from 1967 to 1968 and were also nicknamed Hoovers due to the noise from the No.2 end clean air plant. They were built for the WCML express services on the non-electrified section being leased from English Electric and not acquired by BR until 1973. They later operated mainly between Paddington and the South-West. Eighteen have been saved for preservation. This particular example was withdrawn from services in 1989 and saved from scrap by purchase from Stratford depot by the 50021 Locomotive Association. It is seen here, heading away from the camera, having passed through Ingrow West, with preserved British Railways - Class 14 - D9520 leading, during the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway Diesel Gala, on 21/06/2024. They are working the slightly delayed 14:40 Damems - Keighley 'Goods' service, well really speaking, 'Guards Van Rides'! © Peter Steel 2024.
