These are the city's patron saints, Christian martyrs from the Roman era, the nearest of the two being Estatua de San Germán.

San Servando (the guard) and San Germán (the spear-bearer), have been patron saints of the city since the 17th century, when they replaced the apostle Santiago, who had previously been the patron saint.

Servando and Germán were two brothers from a Christian family. They were the sons of a Roman centurion from Emérita Augusta (present-day Mérida), and following family tradition, they enlisted in the legion while preaching the new faith of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

They are raised on 8-meter Ionic columns with bases decorated with the coats of arms of the Marquis of Valdecañadas, the Spanish Crown, and the City of Cádiz. Both figures are represented as Roman legionaries, following the iconographic tradition of these saints.

These sculptures were originally installed at the now-disappeared Sea Gate, which was the entrance to the pier opposite Plaza de San Juan de Dios. In 1945, they were moved here, where they now stand. elpimpidecadiz.blogspot.com/p/monumentos-san-servando-y-s....
