47765 was built to a Brush Traction design by British Railways at Crewe works in 12/1964 as number D1643, being renumbered 47059 in 07/1973. It was fitted with electric train heating equipment, being renumbered 47631 in 11/1985 and it was named Ressaldar at Crewe Diesel Traction Maintenance Depot in 09/1993. It was fitted with RCH jumper cables and twin fuel tanks for use on ‘Railnet’ services, being renumbered 47765 in 02/1994. It was transferred to Rail Express Systems on 01/04/1995 as part of the privatisation of British Railways. Rail Express Systems was purchased by North and South Railways on 09/12/1995, North and South Railways being renamed as English Welsh & Scottish Railway Limited on 10/07/1996. 47765 was placed in store at Bristol Barton Hill TMD in 03/2000 and was moved to the Defence, Evaluation and Research Agency at Ministry of Defence Shoeburyness in 09/2002 for use as a static generator. It moved to the Mid-Hants Railway in 02/2003 for the same purpose and after the work was completed was moved by road to the Springs Branch Component Recovery and Distribution Centre in 07/2003. Restored in ScotRail livery, it is now based at the East Lancashire Railway where it is seen here about to depart from Ramsbottom, during the ELR Summer Diesel Gala, on 28/06/2024. It is working Service 1J61 12:30 Heywood - Bury Bolton Street - Burrs Country Park - Summerseat - Ramsbottom - Irwell Vale - Rawtenstall, due to arrive at Rawtenstall at 13:40. Preserved British Railways - Class 45 - 45108 - Sulzer Type 4 is trailing. On the nearside platform and heading off into the distance is Harry Needle Railroad Company, Barrow Hill - Class 20 - 20066 - English Electric Type 1. Recently outshopped in British Railways blue, this fine Class 20 is seen here trailing Service 1J60 13:05 Rawtenstall - Irwell Vale - Ramsbottom - Summerseat - Burrs Country Park - Bury Bolton Street - Heywood. Harry Needle Railroad Company, Barrow Hill - Class 37 - 37425 - English Electric Type 3, is leading. Both would be detached at Bury Bolton Street and replaced by preserved British Railways - Class 47 - 'Beeching's Legacy' 47830, which would lead, and Freightliner - Class 70 70014.

The British Rail Class 20, otherwise known as an English Electric Type 1, is a class of diesel-electric locomotive. In total, 228 locomotives in the class were built by English Electric between 1957 and 1968, the large number being in part because of the failure of other early designs in the same power range to provide reliable locomotives.

The locomotives were originally numbered D8000–D8199 and D8300–D8327. They are known by railway enthusiasts as "Choppers". 22 are preserved, including the first of the class built, D8000, which is part of the National Railway Collection at the National Railway Museum in York.
