Funchal is the capital city of Portugal's Madeira archipelago. It's backed by hills and known for its harbour, gardens and Madeira wine cellars. The centuries-old Funchal Cathedral, which mixes Gothic and Romanesque styles, is notable for its carved wooden ceiling. Fronting the harbour and seen lower right is the yellow São Tiago Fortress, built in the 1600s. It now houses the Contemporary Art Museum, with a large collection of Portuguese works. The city has a population of approximately 105,795, making it the sixth largest city in Portugal. Looking in a westerly direction the floodlights of Estádio do Marítimo, the home of C.S. Marítimo, who, as I post this photo are 4th. in LigaPro. This particular day they were playing Torreense who are currently 6th., losing 1-2. They are located in Torre Vedras which is 50.4km north-west of Lisbon.
