Built at Beyer Peacock(Hymek) Ltd., Manchester, in 1963, with a Maybach MD870 unit, this rare loco. had a short life in being withdrawn in 05/1976. It is seen here having just departed from Irwell Vale, during the East Lancashire Railway's Summer Diesel Gala, on 28/06/2024. It is trailing Service 1J64 15:05 Rawtenstall - Irwell Vale - Ramsbottom - Summerseat - Burrs Country Park - Bury Bolton Street - Heywood. Leading is preserved British Railways - 'Warship' Class 42 - 'Onslaught' 832, which was attached at Bury Bolton Street. A further 33 sister locomotives (Class 43) were built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, none of these were saved for preservation. The Warships had a very short life in traffic, D832 was no exception seeing under 12 years service being withdrawn in 12/1972 and entering preservation on the 01/06/1979.
