On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la
After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead
You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la
After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la

This has to be one of my best cell phone panoramic images from last year. The one thing that always gets to me is how come today almost every cheap cell phone has a panoramic shot option yet my big expensive SLR does not and you have to splice images together? This image was taken at Arches National Park Utah when I as at this viewpoint and the need to take a panoramic image was self evident.

I walked through this valley and it didn't take me that long with being for the most part a relatively flat hike except for the last hundred yards or so back to the parking lot. If you look towards the bottom of the picture and magnify you can catch a couple of people walking across to get a proper sense of scale.

Roosevelt Island in a narrow Island that lies in between the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens on the East River. It is a place that has had many names. Originally called Minnehanonck by Native Americans and when purchased from the Canarsie Indians by the Dutch it was renamed Hog Island. When it was captured from the Dutch it was renamed Manning Island after Captain John Manning who seized the island. It was renamed again to Blackwell Island for John Blackwell Manning's son in law. In 1828 the Island was purchased by the city of New York and befitting an Island that was only accessible by ferry at the time they built cheerful places such as a prison, a lunatic asylum and a hospital for people with smallpox and a workhouse for people convicted of petty crimes and a hospital for the poor. By the early twentieth century the asylum was converted to a hospital, the prison was closed down and other hospitals were built and the Island was renamed again to Welfare Island in 1921. In 1930 a elevator was built on the Queensboro Bridge giving much easier access to the island and in 1955 a vehicular bridge was finally built. By the 1960's with Manhatten real estate becoming some of the most expensive in the world and with a island with fantastic waterfront views plans for gentrification was inevitable. In 1973 plans were set to build 20.000 apartments units with the hospitals being relocated or closed. It was renamed Roosevelt Island after US President Franklin Roosevelt and a memorial park dedicated to him was built at the south end of the Island. In during the 1970's a tramway was built to give easier direct access to the Island and not that many years ago a subway station was finally built.
