On 12th September 2009 70013 Oliver Cromwell worked an RTC railtour, "The Hadrian", from Hellifield to Carlisle and then onward to York via the Tyne Valley Line. 1Z75 is pictured on the TV near Warden. The tour started and ended at Peterborough with diesel haulage from Peterborough to Hellifield and York back to Peterborough.

Second up was 70013 Oliver Cromwell working 1Z71, The Waverley, from Cleethorpes to Carlisle, here seen passing the magnificent over the line signal box at Hexham. The early sunshine has given way to cloud cover, leading to the iso setting being cranked up to 800 from the earlier 200, with further deterioration to come by the time the third steam railtour arrived with 46233 Duchess of Sutherland.

Well the rerun to commemorate forty years since the end of steam on British Railways, or should that be British Rail? 45407 & 45231 worked the return leg from Carlisle seen here in a patch of sun at Armathwaite amongst largely cloudy conditions.

On a day when there were no less than three steam charters on the ECML in the North East, it started out with 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley working the "Heart of Midlothian" to Edinburgh as 1Z79 from Hebden Bridge, the A4 powering the train from York. In pleasant sunshine (which didn't last long!) the train is seen at Newcastle upon Tyne from the Castle Keep.

Having spent the morning in Carlisle in very dull damp conditions we drove back East into much better weather altogether and headed to Plawsworth to photograph 60163 Tornado working the return leg of a UK Railtours charter from Dorridge to Newcastle. In total contrast to our earlier efforts further West, the A1 blasts South basking in late afternoon sunshine.
