Spitfire Railtours "Norseman" railtour ran on September 11th 2010 from Kings Cross to Newcastle and return. The Northbound run ran as 1Z55, the return operated via the Durham Coast Line as 1Z56. The latter is seen here at Pelaw on the Durham Coast Line in the hands of 55022, emiting the usual Deltic smoke trail.

During my travels behind Class 55 Deltic in 1981 for some reason 55009 Alycidon was elusive. I was booked on a BR railtour on 28th November 1981 from Newcastle to Edinburgh via Carlisle and Beattock with the return a straight run on the ECML. The day dawned miserable and did not improve later. I positioned myself for a shot of the train arriving at Newcastle and it was 009, yay. The outward run was nothing special, the return was the opposite, already mentioned elsewhere here.

55004 Queens Own Highlander awaits departure from York on 19th October 1981 with 1S27, the 07:36 Plymouth to Edinburgh service, having just taken over from a Class 47/4. This service became an HST working less than a fortnight later.

Another of the tours in the Deltic farewell programme was The Celtic Deltic of 31st October 1981, the loco being two-tone green livery 55002 The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, appropriately pictured about to pass through York. I obviously had a fairly busy day as the first train I photographed was the 07:05 Newcastle yo Edinburgh with 40086, I assume I must have travelled to Berwick and return on this before heading to York, return intended to be on the final Deltic hauled Plymouth to Edinburgh service, which in the event was a disappointment, being worked by 47557.

Early evening at York on 24th November 1981 and 55008 The Green Howards has just arrived with 1L43, the 14:03 Kings Cross to York "semi-fast". These services actually required smart running to maintain time, calling at many intermediate stations, providing a much easier way of travelling between these locations than is possible now. The old type station trolley provided a useful seat for spotters, as can be seen along with the more modern BRUTE type.
