User / One lucky guy / Replica of the Trumpington sugarloaf helm c.1285 with fan crest
6,164 items
This sugarloaf great helm was made by Royal Oak Armoury. The fan crest is sculpted from pine and attaches to the helm via a simple pin that inserts horizontally through a prong at the top of the helm. A point of historical accuracy with this helm is in regard to the ocular reinforcements. They are made of steel just like the rest of the helm. The armourer "gilded" them with brass leaf, to give the gold appearance. No extant helms are fitted with laten or brass oculars, and it is doubtful that they would have been made from such soft metal. Gilding them with laten, bronze, or gold would have been the method to produce this appearance. Often times they were simply painted.
