This was just one tiny snapshot of a Mobula mass leaping event at sunset in the Sea of Cortez. They are Munk's Devil Rays (Mobula munkiana), also known as Smoothtail Mobula, which is famous for acrobatically leaping high in the air. There were dozens of them leaping, but it was difficult to catch them on camera as they were back in the water by the time I had a camera pointed at them, and they were spread over quite an area. They are related to Manta Rays, but are much smaller with a "wingspan" of about a metre.

My title is a line from the song Summertime, written by DuBose Hayward and Ira Gershwin in 1935 for the opera Porgy and Bess, but it has been recorded by many artists as diverse as Janis Joplin, Louis Armstrong and Dun Boy Three.

A male secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius), in Kenya six months ago.

Now I am on my way to a new bird photography trip, to the top of Norway- Varangerhalvøya in Finnmark, with a totally different climate and very different bird species than on my last long trip. Exciting!
