Uttakleiv Beach, Vestvågøy, Lofoten Islands, Norway
On the western shore of Vestvågøy, in the Lofoten Islands archipelago of northern Norway, lies Uttakleiv beach. The strand is famous for its white sands and aquamarine waters against a backdrop of jagged mountains jutting into the sea. The weather in Lofoten is, however, usually vile, which adds to the drama of the place. Low tide reveals a series of pools, which have been shaped by years of savage wind and waves. In one particular pool lies a large stone, rounded by the weather and usually surrounded by tripods: the Dragon’s Eye.

Fjordgård, Senja, Norway
The Norwegian island of Senja (known as Sážžá by the Sami) lies at 69° longitude, well within the Artic Circle. It is fondly known by locals as Norway in miniature, for the mountains and fjords are a microcosm of what this beautiful country has to offer. A unique feature, however, is a mountain peak situated near the remote fishing village of Fjordgård. Known as the Segla (lit. “the Sail” in Norwegian), a piece of rock protrudes impossibly above an encircling fjord, hundreds of metres below. The best view is from the neighbouring mountain, Hesten. In summer, it’s a pleasant hike, but in winter, waist-deep snow and biting winds make it a challenging undertaking. Even for Norway, the view at the end is spectacular.
